It has reasonable tensile strength where better properties than mild steel are required and can be heat treated to provide a good surface hardness with moderate wear resistance by flame or induction hardening processes, but
080M40 grade steel is a medium carbon steel offering moderate tensile strengths. The material is capable of through hardening by quenching and tempering on limited sections, but is more commonly supplied in the untreated or normalised condition.
